Hunting elephants

One cannot be a conservationist and a big game hunter at the same time! The Spanish branch of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has sacked Spanish King Juan Carlos as its honorary president because he went on a safari in Botswana to hunt elephants, which resulted in a public outcry. The big game safari only came to light because the 74-year-old monarch fell and broke his hip on the trip. The conservation group WWF removed the king as its honorary president with an overwhelming vote that was supported by 94 percent of those who attended the meeting. Indeed, why should the king, especially as head of the WWF, be hunting elephants? Elephants are docile and it is hardly a challenge to shoot one with a rifle. The notion of hunting these creatures is appalling and I think that there should have been even more anger directed at someone who kills elephants while serving as the president of an organization dedicated to the conservation of wildlife. I personally find it incomprehensible that anyone could possibly get a thrill out of killing an animal just for fun. S. H. Moulana, Riyadh
