COLOMBO — A court in the Maldives will hear how former president Mohamed Nasheed came to order the arrest of a judge, whose detention sparked protests that forced Nasheed to quit in February. The state Sunday filed a complaint against Nasheed with a magistrate, who said the court would hear evidence over the arrest of criminal court chief judge Abdullah Mohamed in January. The opposition movement against the former president escalated after he ordered the arrest of the judge on charges that he was corrupt, favored opposition activists and undermined the independence of the judiciary. — AFP
