CHENNAI, India — Chennai Super Kings scored a hard-fought 10-run win over Deccan in the Indian Premier League Friday despite Chargers batsman Cameron White’s valiant innings of 77.
White struck two sixes and nine fours in 53 balls but Deccan could only manage 150-5 after Chennai had scored 160-6 at Chidambaram Stadium.
For Chennai, Faf du Plessis top-scored with 42 to ensure a competitive total after captain Mahendra Singh had elected to bat.
White added 68 for the second wicket with Shikhar Dhawan (36) and the target always looked out of reach despite Australian all-rounder Daniel Christian chipping in with an unbeaten 27.
“It was a case of getting a good start, we got a good start. But they came back well with some good fielding,” Deccan captai Kumar Sangakkara said. “We’ve been losing too many games because of our bad fielding this season.”
Earlier, Du Plessis top-scored with a gritty 35-ball innings that featured one six and two fours.
The South African exhibited a clever mix of big hits and finely placed shots to made the most of the two reprieves and ensure a steady stream of runs. He added 64 for the second wicket with Suresh Raina (32).
Dhoni contributed a 28-ball 34 with only two fours.
Chennai is now fourth in the nine-team league with five wins, five losses and one no-result from 11 games.
Deccan remains at the bottom of the table with two wins, seven losses and one no-result from 10 games.
