KANSAS CITY, Kansas — Miguel Angel Ponce scored late in extra time to give Mexico a 2-1 victory over Honduras in Monday’s final of the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament.
Both teams had already qualified for the Summer Games in London by reaching the final.
Ponce slipped behind the Honduras back line in the 116th minute, controlled Javier Cortes’ free kick, and buried it in the net for the game-winner.
Honduras had taken the lead early in the second half when Johnny Leveron headed in Alexander Lopez’s corner, but Marco Fabian equalized for Mexico in the 75th.
Sevilla beats Mallorca
Sevilla scored three second-half goals to beat Mallorca 3-1 Monday, recording a third straight victory to move within reach of the European places in the Spanish league.
Goals from Alvaro Negredo, Manu del Moral and Jesus Navas left Sevilla tied with Atletico Madrid one point behind sixth-place Osasuna, which is in the last Europa League place. Negredo scored in the 51st minute from Navas’ corner, and Del Moral doubled the lead at Sanchez Pizjuan stadium in the 62nd with a well-placed shot inside the far post.
Sevilla winger Jose Antonio Reyes sliced a pass through the defense to meet Navas’ run into the area, and the Spain forward tapped the ball into the net in the 68th.
Tomer Hemed met Pablo Caceres’ cross at the near post to score a consolation goal for Mallorca in the 78th. Spanish leader Real Madrid won 5-1 at Osasuna to maintain its six-point advantage over second-place Barcelona, which won 2-0 against Athletic Bilbao.
Third-place Valencia drew 1-1 with crosstown rival Levante, which is two points behind fourth-place Malaga after it lost 2-0 to Real Betis. — Agencies
