JEDDAH – On his recent visit to the Kingdom, Prince Andrew, Duke of York, met with Saudi students at the British Council in Riyadh, attended an English language session on football with some of the STC staff and discussed World Cup and Olympics 2012.
An international competition for English language learners sponsored by the British Council in cooperation with UK’s Premier League also featured in the talks. “The British Council is one of the best institutes in the Kingdom, in terms of teachers, educational materials, and the exceptional focus on conversational skills,” said Ibrahim Al-Jasser, an STC staff member and a student.
“I had never used emails at work before, but now I can do that with confidence and some of my colleagues even ask me to help them with it. Our non-Arabic speaking customers refer to me now,” he said, adding “it was a pleasure meeting Prince Andrew and discussing football with him”.
Commenting on the ongoing expansion plan of the Council’s English Language Section, Richard Rose, teaching center manager at the Council, said the development aims at increasing the number of students, both male and female, from 10,200 to 15,000 this year. – SG
