Misha’l launches ‘Tree Week’

JEDDAH – Prince Misha’l Bin Majed Bin Abdul Aziz, Governor of Jeddah, officially launched the 33rd Tree Week here Saturday by planting a tree at Al-Shatea Garden.
The ceremony was also attended by senior environment and health officials.
The Al-Shatea Garden, opened for the first time to the general public, covers an area of 35,288 sq. meters. About 1,800 sq. meters of the garden is landscaped with 8,500 sq. meters earmarked for walkways.
This year’s activity is held under the theme “protect the environment and plant a tree”. The activities include the opening of five gardens for the general public in different parts of the city, an essay competition for students and the distribution of flyers and brochures about the benefits of planting trees.
Bahjat Hamwah, Director of Parks and Landscaping at Jeddah Mayoralty, said several schools organized visits to mayoralty nurseries where students were shown modern methods of irrigation and the correct way to plant trees in their homes. – SG
