RIYADH – Saudi Arabia and India finalized in New Delhi Tuesday a draft treaty for the extradition of prisoners and criminals.
The move came during the visit of a delegation from the Ministry of Interior to discuss security issues.
The delegation was headed by Abdullah Al-Ansari, the Acting Director of the General Administration for Legal Affairs and International Cooperation at the Ministry of Interior.
“The negotiations were held in an atmosphere of friendship and with productive security cooperation between the two countries to strengthen our ties,” Al-Ansari said.
An Indian foreign ministry official spoke of the “excellent” relations between the two countries, “particularly in security matters”, and praised the Kingdom’s work in “fighting terrorism and extremist thought”.
There are as many as 6,481 Indians languishing in jails of different countries with 1,369 alone in Saudi Arabia.
This was revealed in a reply by the Ministry of External Affairs to a Jammu resident, Raman Kumar Sharma’s, RTI query.
United Arab Emirates has second highest number (1,221) of Indian prisoners, while Pakistan is third with a count of 853.
Of the 6,481 prisoners, 121 are women. Pakistan has only two Indian women in its jails. Cyprus has the highest number (19) of Indian women offenders. – Okaz/SG with agencies
