JEDDAH – Residents of the Quwaizah and Al-Sawaed districts have welcomed the media attention on their flood-hit neighborhoods as it has helped to highlight the human tragedy that took place.
Some residents said that the media coverage had also helped to expose many shortcomings by the authorities in preparing for the floods.
Resident Saleh Al-Sulami said that shedding light on the tragedy made the relevant government bodies work harder to relieve the suffering and correct problems.
He said the coverage in Quwaizah, Al-Sawaed and other districts had helped to highlight the effects of the disaster.
Muhammad Asiri, another resident, said the media reported “our tragic situation with integrity” since the disaster occurred.
Khaled Al-Otaibi said the large presence of women journalists indicated that the profession has progressed considerably.
Fathiyah Edris, a member of the MBC’s women’s crew, said the tragedy has forced journalists to try to live the experience of the people through their reporting.
Camera supervisor of MBC’s program Kalam Nawaem, Fadwa Obaid, said the effect of the event was “disastrous”.
“We tried to report the people’s situation transparently,” she said, adding that her team had recorded many stories of flood-affected people. – Okaz/SG
