SR35m flood-damaged check ordered renewed by court

JEDDAH – Quwaizah residents may not all be as impoverished as has been depicted of late, if the fat checks that were washed away in the flood in the district are any indication.
A SR35 million check swept away by floodwaters last month was reinstated by a court order Saturday.
The bank had earlier declined to void the certified check and redeposit the amount into the original account, requesting a court’s ruling to that effect.
The man who wrote the check testified before the judge that the check was inside his car in Quwaizah when it was swept away and damaged by the floods. The beneficiary of the check also gave his testimony. The court based its decision on a flood damage report from the Civil Defense.
The bank will release the amount back into the original account from which it was deducted against the certified check. A new check for the beneficiary will be issued.
“It was a smooth ruling that didn’t take time,” the beneficiary said. The money was part of a business deal, he said, without giving any further details. – Okaz/SG
