TAIF – Authorities in Taif are investigating accusations that a man subjected his wife and grown-up children to physical abuse over a period of 18 years in order to “exorcise the jinn” with which he believed they were possessed.
The man was arrested on Sunday following a report from his wife and three sons to the Social Protection Home saying that he would habitually beat them and lock them in the house, confiscating their telephones until all signs of physical violence had disappeared.
The treatment, which according to his wife also included Qur’anic readings to exorcise jinn, led to their 30-year-old son suffering from “mental problems” and abandoning his studies and work. The son still lives in a room on the roof of their home, the wife said.
A second son who is 18 years of age and suffers from diabetes, was also subjected to beatings, while their 10-year-old youngest son was said by his mother to refuse to go to school out of fear of being beaten by his father in front of his school friends.
The head of Social Affairs in Taif said that a statement had been taken from the woman and that a report was currently being drawn up. – Okaz/SG
