Mosques silent for Friday prayers

AL-EIS – For the first time since Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) migrated to Madina from Makkah, the call for prayer fell silent at mosques in the town of Al-Eis and surrounding villages.
The mountains and valleys of Al-Eis, Al-Watan newspaper reports, fell silent at prayer times for the first time in 14 centuries of Islamic history in which the region has been an important element of the Prophet’s Sira, most notably in the wars with the Quraish tribe.
Residents evacuated from the area due to the recent earth tremors were saddened to leave behind them some 22 mosques to remain silent for Friday prayers, but signs of encouragement have come from the Saudi Geological Survey.
“The situation in Al-Eis is showing great signs of improvement,” the head of the commission told Al-Watan on Thursday. “There has been a significant drop in the tremors’ intensity from over five on the Richter scale down to below three.”
