MAKKAH – The youngest candidate for the Board of Directors at the Makkah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) has announced her withdrawal, weakening the chances of a female victory in the elections.
Areej Jastiniah announced her withdrawal after encountering an absence of a women’s electoral base in Makkah and the lack of a women’s bloc for MCCI elections. Areej Jastiniah said she originally stood for nomination in order to give women opportunities in the economic field, and that she had hopes of emulating the role of other women candidates in the Jeddah and Riyadh chambers.
Jastiniah said the Ministry of Commerce and Industry has recognized the obstacles facing women in elections, especially during the first trial of its kind for businesswomen in Makkah.
The elections to the board, with 60 male and four female candidates, will take place between Oct. 21 and 23. – Okaz
