SINGAPORE – Dalma Mohsin, 16, will become the first Saudi woman athlete to participate in an Olympics when she takes part in the first Youth Olympic Games being held in Singapore.
About 3,500 athletes from 205 countries are participating in the first Youth Games here. Dalma will compete in the hurdles on Monday and Tuesday. Head of the Olympic Council of Asia, Hussien Al-Musallam, said the Saudi girl’s participation is a response to the International Olympic Committee’s requirements which make one woman athlete at least from each country participating in the Olympics mandatory.
“Asian Olympic Council is happy with the participation of both sexes and we welcome the first-time participation of women athletes from Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Brunei,” he said.
He added that “Dalma Mohsin will be wearing Hijab.” – AFP
