Distance witch finally caught; 118 detained this year

MAKKAH – The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (Hai’a) has handed over to Makkah Police an Asian woman accused of practicing magic for clients in both the Kingdom and abroad.
A police spokesman said that the 50-year-old woman, who had repeatedly fled in previous attempts to detain her, had managed to convince clients of powers to conduct her practices in the Gulf and Asian countries from her base in Makkah.
The arrest was made after the Hai’a sent in a woman purportedly asking for her husband to be turned into an “unquestioning obedient man”.
The accused will be turned over to the Commission for Investigation and Prosecution ahead of appearing before a court.
Authorities in Makkah have said, meanwhile, that since the beginning of the year 118 persons have been arrested in the province for “practicing magic” and “using the Book of Allah in a derogatory manner” in their acts.
According to Al-Jazira newspaper Monday, the police spokesman in the region Misfir Al-Ju’eid said that 74 percent of those detained were females and their clients mostly women teachers “with the financial capability” to meet the fees asked.
“The public has helped a lot in the detention of these people, and some of them have refused to accept financial rewards, being only concerned with bringing them to the attention of the authorities,” Al-Ju’eid said.
Al-Ju’eid further urged the public to “report any persons practicing magic or swindling or fortune telling”, describing such people as “corrupters and morally bankrupt who have not been rewarded in this world and will not be rewarded in the hereafter”. – Okaz/SG
