OPINION
Anger and alienation of the Right has to be addressed
James J. Zogby
There is a social movement stirring on the far right of American politics and it bodes ill for our future.
It is, in the classic sense, a movement, not an organization, with no coherent structure, no creed or litmus test for membership. Rather, it represents disparate currents, born of transformative developments and traumatic events that have impacted the US in recent decades.
This movement has manifested itself in several forms. There are the anti-immigrant armed militias patrolling our southern border keeping out “illegals.” There are also the “tax party” demonstrators, many of whom have morphed into the angry chanting mobs that are now disrupting Congressional town meetings over health care reform. And there are the so-called “birthers”, a not so small fringe on the far- right, that questions Barack Obama’s birth in the US and, therefore, his right to hold the office of President.
If the individuals involved in these currents have anything in common, it is that they are angry and alienated and have identified “government” as a source of their problems and, therefore, as a target of their wrath.
Behind all of this discontent, of course, are real problems. The economic crisis in America did not just begin with the collapse of the financial sector in the fall of 2008. For years now, the US economy has undergone a steady transformation. The loss of our manufacturing base has resulted in dramatic social dislocation evidenced by the collapse of many once prosperous and stable communities. As factories closed, not only were jobs lost and economic security threatened, but people were forced to move, neighborhoods died and families were at risk.
All during the 1990’s, despite gains on Wall Street, many middle class Americans were squeezed. Real incomes declined, costs of health care, education and basic commodities rose, resulting not only in a declining standard of living for many, but, for the 1st time in American history, a significant portion of the middle class began to question whether their children would be able to achieve the same economic status as their parents.
The trauma of 9/11 and Katrina presented a double jolt, shaking to an even greater degree American’s sense of security and their confidence in the government’s ability to perform.
Add to this a nativist/racist current, fueled by large numbers of immigrants from the south and fear of new foreigners (especially, after 9/11, Muslims) and the persistent presence of anti-black sentiment, and you have the ingredients of the lethal brew that is now coming to a boil.
All of this, however, did not erupt spontaneously, it was helped, fueled by fires set by those who sought, in ways subtle and not so subtle, to exploit the fears afoot across the land. Radical talk show hosts like Rush Limbaugh and Mike Savage, Fox News and even CNN’s Lou Dobbs exploited these issues – as did President George W. Bush’s political advisor, Karl Rove, who used it for electoral success. Even Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign playbook tapped into these currents, as did the McCain/Palin campaign strategists.
And so here we are in the midst of a hot summer, with “birthers” fulminating about Obama’s “foreignness”, angry mobs breaking up town meetings, and polling numbers showing a deepening partisan divide across the nation..
All the while these events are unfolding, analysts and commentators are spending endless hours of airtime observing and pointing accusing fingers, without making an effort to understand how this came to be and where it can go. Some conservatives are surely at fault for thinking they can simply exploit this anger, turning it on and then off, at will. And some liberals, too, are at fault for dismissing the anger they see, suggesting that it is simply manufactured and artificial and, therefore, can be ignored.
I am reminded of similar developments that occurred in 1919 at the beginning of the “Red Scare.” Then too, a national movement, fueled by fears of immigration, economic dislocation and war-time anti-foreign bigotry was exploited by some, ignored by others, until it got out of control, with lethal consequences.
If we are not careful and understanding, and if we do not start now, both to address this troubling anger and alienation, and to hold accountable those who are stoking the embers of discontent, we could end up in the throes of a full-fledged nativist siege that could tear apart the fabric of our nation. – SG

So any anti-government sentiment is due to rascist- "birther" thinking? People are angry because the whole premise of America as defined by our Constitution has been torn apart. The contract is null and void. It is ruining the country, and it will destroy it financially at the least within the next few decades. Unlike global warming, that IS the truth. That is the truth for illegal hispanics, and for blacks, and for people born in Hawaii at whichever hospital he was born at.

The author forgot a huge thing: the breakneck speed of change since January 20, 2009 ~ that is being shoved down the throats of the American people. It's a big government take-over. It doesn't even resemble the heart of the United States of America. It resembles the playbook of Socialism. One has many examples from history to put fear in the hearts of the people as to what is happening in our country.

Instead of laying the blame on conservative and liberal airheads, place the blame where it belongs. The policies and actions of the U.S. Congress today, and in the past , along with a push in some areas by the various presidents have the led us where we are today. While we need continuity in government, to many politicians vote not for the good of the country, but for the monied interests that keep them in power.

"And there are the so-called “birthers”, a not so small fringe on the far- right,"

What a joke. The birthers are a tiny group, taken seriously by almost no one.

Gee John, you're not concerned about a President who wants to remake America into a European Socialist Democracy, take over the economy, the auto industry, the banking industry and force Americans to give up their freedom to big government control "for everybody's own good". The kool aid is getting to you, and you and the rest of Liberal America should brace themselves for 2010. The Sleeping Giant has awakened, and we are a Freedom Loving people, citizens of a Republic.

The problem, Mr Zogby, is not a nativist, extreme right wing movement, as you propose, but the extreme left wing, socialist, programs proposed by the Obama administration. In case you don't get it this country is center right in its political orientation and Obama and his troops are trying to change that. Far from "tearing apart the fabric of our nation", what you are witnessing is an attempt to keep that fabric from unravelling. You, sir, don't know this country.

Racists? Nativist? You do not understand us at all. It's an inherent distrust of the government borne of all free men. It's the same spirit that caused the Founding Fathers to kick the British out and form the first government in history that was meant to be answerable to the people, not the other way around. You have so little understanding of American history and culture. You have so little understanding of freedom. We are not racists, ande we're getting fed up with being called that.

...by:
- preserving our traditional freedoms, particularly independent healthcare, from nationalist-socialist Democrat seizure
- returning ALL government-seized industries to private control... NOW!
- stopping plundering of the fisc by leftist thieves
- aggressively defeating armed religious enemies of democracy, particularly those funded by Saudi Arabia and its minions (OBL is not a Swede!)
- and oh yes, let's make sure the man in the White House is qualified to be there.
Is it 2010 yet?

I would never have guessed that Dr. James J. Zogby is president of the Arab American Institute. Limbaugh is a conservative, not a racist and/or religious fanatic.

Mr Zogby is not very adept at spreading propaganda. Yes Conservatives are upset at the continual degradation of our society and its ethics and morals. The left or liberals support abortion, homosexuality, destruction of the family, different laws for different people based upon race and or sexual preference and ending freedom of religion and free speech. What normal, sane human being would not be angry? Christians, Muslims and Jews must unite to stop the purveyors of hate and immorality.

Ayn Rand warned us what would happen when the looters reached the tipping point of power were they could enslave the rest of us, and it seems that day has come. All of those whiny idiots in DC need to go. Every day that congress or the senate is in session they spend more of our children's money on aquiring more power for themselves.
- There is no part of the Bill of Rights that is negotiable. Not now, not EVER. Now if you will excuse me, I am off to the range to practice.-

Mr. Zogby is the President of the Arab American Institute, and his opposition to Americans who will not stand for dictatorship from our government is obviously biased.

All his accusations against the American citizenry are uncovered when we check his allegiance to the radical left leaning liberal constituents in this country! The zogby poll is a fraud perpetrated by an un-American citizen. Facts are not allowed!
