Punish wife-beaters, says court president
By Na’eem Tamim Al-Hakeem
RIYADH – Saleh Aaal Al-Sheikh, President of the District Court in Riyadh, has said that any husband who “slaps or beats his wife severely” should be punished.
Al-Sheikh, speaking on the issue following remarks by a Saudi judge earlier this month saying that wives deserved to be slapped by their husbands if they overspent on clothes, said that Islam “has honored human beings by protecting them from any assault and abuse. Islam has stipulated the penalties for anyone who commits mistakes.”
“The husband may discipline the wife if she commits a mistake, but that doesn’t mean slapping her in the face or beating her cruelly,” Al-Sheikh told Okaz newspaper.
“Some Ulema (religious scholars) have said that he may only discipline her with the Siwak stick (a small twig used as a toothbrush), but slapping in the face is definitely forbidden in all cases, whether the wife is guilty or not,” Al-Sheikh said.
“Domestic violence should be punished by the law, even if the wife withdraws her complaint,” he added.
Earlier this month Judge Hamad Al-Razine was quoted as saying that a wife who is given SR1,200 and spends SR900 of it on an abaya could be slapped.
“If her husband slaps her on the face as a reaction to her action, she deserves that punishment,” Al-Razine said.
The judge made the comments, in which he also stated that women were equally responsible for domestic violence yet escaped blame, at a seminar in Abha for the National Family Safety Program. – Okaz/SG

What century are these people living in?Why on earth should a man be entitled to "discipline the wife if she commits a mistake"?If she is a grown woman then she doesn't need to be disciplined by anyone.Or are we talking about 8 year old brides again? Is the wife entitled to discipline the husband when he makes a mistake or behaves like an idiot?I'd love to know what the men who advocate "disciplining the wife" would think if a woman decided to discipline them, or beat them with a siwak stick.

Hurrah to finally hear some sense spoken.

How kind of the President of Riyadh District Court to clarify things for us. The words...out of frying pan into the fire...come to mind. His comments reveal much. This is the real key issue... Saudis have been raised to believe that females are inferior, over-emotional creatures that need to be guided and if necessary, "disciplined". Let's not beat around the bush. As long as chauvinism is dressed up as social policy..the females of the K.S.A will continue to struggle.

This is to "Just a woman".

As salaamu 'alaykum(may Peace be upon you),

It is a physiological fact that men and women are different. And under Islamic law they are treated as different. Men and women in Islam don't have identical rights and duties. They have complementary rights and duties. If you think from that perspective you would be able to appreciate Shaykh al-Shaykh's comments.

Both men and women can discipline their children and men have right to discipline their wives.

Your comments are very telling. Yes, men and women are very different, physiologically, psychologically, and emotionally. That doesn't obviate the fact that BOTH men and women make mistakes. What if the husband makes a mistake? Can the wife discipline him? If not, why not? What if the husband blows all the money, stays out late with his buddies, flirts with women at malls (as a lot of married Saudi men do)? Who disciplines him in those cases? Those aren't crimes... so he can do what he pleases!

I can asure you, whatever muslim male you're speaking of doing what ever he pleases probably don't hang out with "God fearing buddies" all night. I've been muslim 16 years and my wife sent a search party of MUSLIM MEN looking for me when I stayed fishing BY MYSELF all night before she found out how much I loved it. Indeed one of the MEN whom she sent found me on the lake fishing. I was so embarrassed. Things are not always what they appear to be.
