FRONT PAGE New guidelines on teaching material
By Mohammed Al-Enizi
DAMMAM – The Ministry of Education has ordered the erasing of images of pigs and musical instruments from English language teaching materials in privately-owned schools, along with the omission of everything that does not conform to Islamic teachings.
The ministry has also said that permission will be given to use books other than official ministry books only after being informed of the school’s study plan and the stage of education for which the materials will be used.
The Director General of Education at National and International Schools at the ministry, Khalid Bin Saeed Al-Suheim, has asked all regional directors of education to comply fully with the ministry’s request. – Okaz/SG

Who's interpretation of Islamic teachings? Presumably those who seek to turn smiles to frowns and laughter to tears. The only thing disallowed regarding the pig is eating it, there is nothing else to say it should be treated so rudely. And this strange attitude to musical instruments, where does that come from? Another case of no steps forwards, just several steps backwards. Maybe KSA should do away with all the different ministries and simply have one, The Ministry for the Imposition of Misery!
» What about university textbooks ? | Umm Abdullah posted... Thank you very much for correcting this issue in the private schools. However, what about the university English language textbooks ? There are a lot of Islamically inappropriate materials in them all. Do we turn a blind eye to this knowing well that this will have a sure effect on the students ? Please do something to remove correct textbooks that are being used by foreign language schools (Bell International) in government universities.
» Ignorance | Robyn Graves posted... Watch out for those cartoon pigs playing instruments!? These are the threat to Islam!? Meanwhile Ignorance breeds Intolerance breeds Hate breeds Death and Destruction. What century is this? I can't wait for this story to make it into the Western Press.
» Time to Act | Saad posted... The decaying western societies have corrupted the education system. It is high time that the dirt is cleaned not only from education but also other entertainments. Even Cartoons, which are supposed to entertain children have become more vulgar and does depict characters which are inmical Islam.
» Nothing Un-islamic about the current text | Abdur Rahman posted... If the children dont even know what a pig or amusical instrument look like, how are they going to know why and what is haraam in the first place. the ministry only proposes preventive measures, not educationl ones. Is not it aware of all the un-islamic culture inside the residential compounds through out the country? they only think one-dimensionally. tell the kids why music or pig is forbidden in Islam, just blinding them from it is going to provoke them even further to fall into sin!
» UNBELIEVABLE! | shana badawi posted... I am so confused about this so called "Islamic rule" concerning swine (pigs/hogs). Aren't pigs created by the Almighty God? Doesn't God command respect and good treatment of all his creatures? I guess this ruling means that they will also have to erase all images of cats, dogs, tigers, monkeys, frogs, etc... since we are also not allowed to eat them! There are so many more important issues going on in KSA that do not conform to Islamic teachings that need to be corrected first!
» | Abu Safiyyah posted... There is nothing backward with implementing such a policy. I don't see the problem with ensuring that anything that is not in conformity with Islamic teachings is omitted from such textbooks. In spite of any shortcomings in the KSA, I would say they certainly do their utmost in adhering to Islamic principles.
» join the 21st century | hasan posted... Of all the issues that Muslims have to deal with in the new world, this is what concerns the ministry? Today it is images of Pig, and music. Well, what about pictures? What about internet? what about music in the vehicles? where do you stop?
Why dosen't the ministry teach students about human rights, and simple humanity towards other fellow human being? Have you seen how most Natives treat the non-Natives? Is that Islamic? I never realised how great Islam is until i moved to the US.
