BAGHDAD – Iraqi journalist Muntader Al-Zeidi who threw a pair of shoes at US President George W. Bush is injured from apparent beatings by Iraqi security men, according to his brother.
Dergham Al-Zeidi, citing a security source at the highly fortified Green Zone, said his brother’s hands and ribs are fractured and he has eye and leg injuries.
Dergham said his brother is being held at the Green Zone by security bodies functioning under Iraqi National Security Adviser Muwafaq Al-Rabei.
Al- Rabei refused to comment on the allegation.
Muntader was born on Jan. 15, 1979, his sister, Hana, said. A bachelor, he was living alone in an apartment along Al-Rasheed Street here, near where his brothers reside.
Muntader might have been provoked by the inhumane attitude of the American troops toward the Iraqi people, Hana said. “What the American forces commit daily constitutes a great insult which no Iraqi can bear or turn a deaf ear to. What happened was spontaneous and not politically motivated,” Hana said.
She said her family did not know about Muntader’s whereabouts and fear for his life, afraid that he would be handed over to the Americans. – Okaz/SG.
