FRONT PAGE 512 students called back from abroad
Saudi Gazette report
RIYADH – The Ministry of Higher Education has called back 512 students studying abroad and ejected them from the King’s Scholarship Program due to poor performances and frequent absences, Al-Hayat reported.
To help address the issue of poor academic performances abroad, the ministry is organizing orientation courses for students before joining universities abroad.
The courses will last for three months but may be extended to a year, “depending on their success”, said Abdullah Al-Mousa, undersecretary at the Ministry of Higher Education for Scholarships.
The ministry had also stopped sending scholarships to 42 universities around the world due to overcrowding and substandard performances on the part of the host institution.
Students complain
Nearly 90 percent of students sent on scholarships complained about the levels of stipends they receive.
The scholarship program was not spontaneously created. “It has been designed to meet the country’s requirements in all fields of specialization, especially those for which there is a great demand from the labor market,” Al-Mousa said.
The ministries of economy and planning and labor and the Council of the Saudi Chambers of Commerce and Industry were also actively involved in the program, he added.
Addressing the issue of scholarship students sent to Ukraine, Al-Mousa pointed out that those Saudis who studied medicine at their own expense or through the self-financing program had maintained high standards.
“This encouraged us to send a further 500 students on scholarships, but we later discovered some violations that led us to withdraw many of them from Ukrainian universities,” he said.
False certificates
Maged Al-Harbi, director of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Scholarship Program, said the education ministry had discovered false certificates submitted by applicants for the King’s Scholarships Program.
Al-Harbi said the students, who had used the computer program Photoshop to doctor their credentials, could expect action to be taken against them.

Most of them are responsible and serious students and the money invested for them is worth for the Saudi Kingdom. What I will suggest here to give them extensive orientation for by a reliable agency which can thoroughly prepare them for study abroad based on the country and culture they are going as it immensely help them to meet this challenge

» Advisor | International advisor posted... I've had the pleasure to work with Saudi students not doing well at 4 year universities. I think one of the problems is that the students are put in large research universities when their skill set often matches community colleges better. Perhaps considering skill building before these universities would greatly help the students!
» mahdi- america | Mahdi posted... no please. i do not wanna go home empty hands. i do not want anyone to call me loser ): this article scared the hell out of me. imagine that after we spent 3 years in the states, we called back to go home. omg wish us good ya shabab (:
» Responsibility | abo hawraa posted... Everyone should feel responsible about himself. This is a great chance to have a scholarship, I encourge every student to keep working hard and reach their goal no matter what they face. Everyone should follow the instruction given to him. Don't be "loser" as Mahdi stated.
» A chance not to miss | EIB posted... We are all hopes that all scholars take advantage of this opportunity and do well in their studies. Thanks to MOHE and SACM closly monitoring the progress of the students and hope the students do exceptionally good and return home to continue the building and advancement of our country.
» It's all because of you MOHE !! | West Coast Boy posted... Good job MOHE, send some unfit, lower grade, and irresponsible students throguh wasta (influence), spend millions of dollars on them, and bring them back without getting their degrees they were sent to get!!
MOHE shoud've given the scholarship to those serious students who deserve it, but not to some careless students just because they're a family of someone working at MOHE.
» list of universities | ارنو posted... MOHE shoud've given the scholarship to those serious students who deserve it, but not to some careless students just because they're a family of someone working at MOHE.
Does anyone have a list of which 42 universities are cancelled. I can only find 33 names on the Ministry's website.
» OMG!! | what a pity!! posted... that's really bad news for those who have apprecaited the value of getting a scholarship. There should be a code of ethics for serious students sothat the gov. won't send irresposible students.
all what can say for these students who lost their scholarships is Allah with you and i hope other students take advanteges of them.
» Thank you advisors | Saudi/American abroad posted... all what can say for these students who lost their scholarships is Allah with you and i hope other students take advanteges of them.
Was really nice to see comments from foriegn students advisors, i think we need see more of that. What the Saudi governmant should do is to send forms to all the universities that have Saudi students so they could get preoper advise on what Saudi students really need. People who have been in the US ages ago shouldint orien the new students as customs change over time, paying for those adviseors to come and lecture new Saudi scholars is the best way to do it, as they are updated with whats new.
» | saudi posted... i hope our government investigate and stop the corruption happening at SACM.am afraid our government's goal is nt gonna be approached as long the people at SACM are the same
» Saudi Arabia above everything | ali from UNT posted... here at University of North Texas, the university is doing a good job for motivating the international students for attendance; especially, those who study in English Language; IELI or ELI. for Saudies, I hope attendance and performance at university would come from the saudi students themselves because i'm sure that they know their responsibility here in USA as ambassador for Saudi Arabia.
» | Elizabeth posted... All students should take there education seriously. If it is within the means of the Saudi govt. to positively influence the outcome of a scholarship program, then I feel that it is there obligation to do so. If only others would do the same!
» All about the culture... | Ismail H posted... Its all about the culture. Saudis DO NOT have a good work ethic, just because life is very comfortable and they have cheap labor doing everything for them (maids, drivers, servants) in addition to the massive welfare state that Saudi is. That and not understanding ACADEMIC English are the major reasons why Saudis struggle at overseas universities.
Aramco does an excellent job of recruiting the best by making them take a test and go through a prep year. Maybe the govt. can learn from that...
» | S.A posted... I'm a Saudi student currently studying in North America. I'm very thankful to have obtained this scholarship. I deserve this opportunity. However, from what I have seen here and in other universities, a lot of the Saudi students sent abroad don't appreciate this opportunity and consider it play time. It's sad and it hurts the rest of the students that actually want to benefit academically. This issue MUST be addressed. And true, the Saudization process is a VERY LONG way from being perfected.
» KFUPM, YIC and JIC | Fahad posted... in my point of view, the schlarship should be given to the students whose English language is perfect. and i think the students who deserve this schlarship are:
1- king Fahad university students
2- Yanbu Industrial college students
3- Jubail industrial college students
because the medium of instruction in those institutions is English
