NATION Sighting of moon a must, Ulema board
MAKKAH – The Board of Senior Ulema dismissed the idea of determining the beginning of Ramadan with astronomic calculations without visibly sighting the month’s crescent, Al-Madina reported.
The Grand Mufti, Sheikh Abdul Aziz Bin Abdullah Aal Sheikh, said astronomic calculations are based on mathematical equations and are not acceptable in terms of fasting. He said the Prophet’s (pbuh) Hadith of “Fast at its sighting” and the one of “Do not fast until you sight it” were clear and decisive.
The Board finished discussing the issue last Tuesday and concluded to continue depending on sighting the crescent since only three members agreed on using the mathematical calculations instead. – SG

The crescent could not have been visible today 31/08/08 due to (1) The sunset today was at 6:12pm and the moon set at 6:30pm. With the difference of 18 minutes it is impossible to see the crescent. (2) The illumination of the moon at the time of setting was just 0.4% that would also make it impossible to see the crescent. The new moon was definitely born but not the visible crescent........Hence, Ramadhan started today based on completion of 30 days of Shabaan, not by seeing the crescent. Simple

They did the same kind of announcement for Ramadaan that without any prominent Shadat of MoonSighting they declared Sept.1 2008, first Ramadaan. Many of the mosques that follow salafi faction opted for their announced dates. Please advise which organziation should we follow? ISNA (so-called Salafi people) or ICNA.
