NATION Girl gets a year in jail, 100 lashes for adultery
By Adnan Shabrawi
JEDDAH – A 23-year-old unmarried woman was awarded one-year prison term and 100 lashes for committing adultery and trying to abort the resultant fetus.
The District Court in Jeddah pronounced the verdict on Saturday after the girl confessed that she had a forced sexual intercourse with a man who had offered her a ride. The man, the girl confessed, took her to a rest house, east of Jeddah, where he and four of friends assaulted her all night long.
The girl claimed that she became pregnant soon after and went to King Fahd Hospital for Armed Forces in an attempt to carry out an abortion. She was eight weeks’ pregnant then, the hospital confirmed.
According to the ruling, the woman will be sent to a jail outside Jeddah to spend her time and will be lashed after delivery of her baby who will take the mother’s last name. – Okaz/SG

» Sheer Injustice | Raphael D' Souza posted... Referring to the above article, the only crime the poor girl did was that she accepted a free ride from a stranger for which she was awarded 1 year jail & 100 lashes. As per her confession, she was raped by those 5 filthy creatures. Her only fault was that she accepted a free ride from a stranger. If her crime was so great as to win her such a painful punishment, then those dirty filthy pigs deserve to be hanged or given capital punishment as per Islamic Shariah. Protect the law don't abuse it.
» Justice! | Haja Abu Bucker posted... What happened to the four persons who had forced their ways upon that hapless girl? Had they been tracked by the security personnel and held accountable? If only the girl victim were to be penalized, will amount to gross violation of human values that could easily be regarded as justice NOT-delivered in proper form!
» Girl gets a year in jail, 100 lashes for adultery | Horace Kindler posted... Another example of the barbarity and injustice of the judge. The woman is raped and she is the one punished. Was anything done to apprehend the five men? Is anything done to free her from having an unwanted pregnancy and child? What a mockery!
» Girl gets a year in jail, 100 lashes for adultery | Susie of Arabia posted... Why don't you just call a spade, a spade? The article pussyfoots around using the correct term for what happened to this unfortunate woman - and that is RAPE. Saying that the woman "confessed" to a "forced sexual intercourse" sounds so ridiculous. In any other civilized society, she is NOT the one who did something wrong - only in Saudi Arabia! Mr. Shabrawi obviously needs a better command of the English language, since he also misused the term "adultery" too.
Editor's Note:
Thanks for your comment. Our reporter used the term the court used to hand down its verdict. The court ruling did not mention it as a 'rape incident.' The court, however, did not release further details about its decision. We just report the story like it is told.
Thanks.

Dear Editor - Thank you for your clarification and my apologies to Mr. Shabrawi. Reports like this one irk me to no end. Clearly the court in this case is the ridiculous party accountable for perpetuating the myth that rape victims are responsible for their plight, and not barbaric men who simply cannot control themselves. When will Saudi Arabia recognize that this problem is with the men and stop blaming and punishing the women?

2.) A FORCED sexual action which then led to a GANG rape. And then an illegitimate pregnancy! What is wrong with your system??? 3.) I'd like to know what happened to the men in this case? probably nothing. Because that's how backwards that system is. I'm disgusted.

What kind of message is this sending to saudi criminals?
» Follow-up! | Haja Abu Bucker posted... Thanks for the editor's note. As the readers are equally concerned of that hapless girl; Will the SG follow-up this case as to what happened afterwards? Is justice restored and the rapists were caught?
» Tfeh | Sami Kabani posted... The punishment is truly unjust and against human rights! I agree the girl must be punished for placing herself in this situation but to actually be jailed for a year and lashed is disgusting. No mention of what happens to the rapists. They go free I guess, what a nice country a safe haven for rapists and a corrupt law that empowers men. Also, what a sick interpretation of sharia, for any adultery committed four male witnesses should be present. From the story none were there or were they? Shame!
» So this is the most merciful, most compassionate verdict they could dole out, and let me restate this, TO THE VICTIM... OF A RAPE?! That could be YOUR DARLING MOTHER,
YOUR SWEET SISTER,
YOUR LOVING WIFE, waiting in a cell for her rape-borne child to be born and then getting ONE HUNDRED TORTURE LASHES. FOR GETTING RAPED. I'm disgusted.
» Demand Justice | Shawn Fleek posted... Victims of rape are not supposed to be punished, they're supposed to get help, and they should not have to carry the child of the person who rapes them. That baby is going to have a terrible life, thanks to that judge. find the rapists and hang them.
» People are people, even in repressed societies | The other side of the coin... posted... What if she made a mistake and tried to cover it up by lying? She got pregnant by having consensual sex with another man, got pregnant, maybe talked with him about it and understood he wouldn't support her, so she did what she could. Is it possible she lied?
» Supposedly the girl would need several male (perhaps even family related) witnesses to press charges on the five men who raped her. So, probably, those guys will just keep on raping.
» | musharraf abu posted... This is why so many others see us as barbarians. Why do we punish a woman when she was raped? She could not have fought off five men. » Barbarians punish rape victim | Pearl posted... What hypocrisy. One woman with five men. Why should she be the one punished? Was she expected to fight them off? It is unfortunate that this is a society where men are not encouraged or required to take responsibility for their actions - like the sexual torture inflicted on this unfortunate woman. I understand that the values are different, but still consider this barbarian.

» Poor girl... | Inka posted... Please tell this girl that other women in the world are sorry she had to be put through such a traumatic ordeal. It's not fair that she be convicted for something she obviously had no choice in. If she was assaulted, then she didn't want it, therefore was raped. It's like charging a man who was beaten to within an inch of this life with assault and battery. And to be forced to carry her rapists' child is more horrible. It's a shame such injustice exists in our world.

If the story is told in such a way as to create some notion of being raped as some kind of crime, it is your duty as a dignified journalist to question this notion. This is the most RIDICULOUS THING I have EVER heard. You sorely need to evaluate the way you view women! Moving backwards into history will get us nowhere! Okay lets say that this is true...She deserves a year in jail and 100 lashes for having sex? Sex is the biological makeup of our entire species. Without it we will not exist. WHY DO WE BRAND IT SO HARSHLY? Because the bible said so? The 5 men are animals, and dont deserve life.
» Weird Culture | matt posted... Only in the middle east can a women get raped then put in jail while the people who raped her get a pat on the back. Mean while you have morons who come on here with the logic that anyone who gets raped was either asking for it or is lieing about it. Middle eastern culture is weird. The men should be in jail
» Saudi laws | Gryffin posted... As soon as she accepted a ride from a man not her father, husband or brother, she was in the wrong by Saudi law. Totally patriarchal society. If they didn't have oil, we'd never have heard of this. That said, quaint sci-fi story called "Two Hawks from Earth" has some interesting ways of punishing rapists (not victims) that definitely appeal.

That's disgusting. Honestly, how can anyone REALLY believe that? Did she entice them by just being there? And if it were your daughter, or your wife, or whatever, would you feel the same way? Ugh. I'm glad I live in America.

That any country in the world could treat a rape victim like a criminal should bring shame upon the whole human race. What is particularly sickening is the post from Acmed who says she should have been stoned.
Until Saudi law is changed, it will never be accepted as a civilised or compassionate country. The women are in a worse situation than black people were when they were enslaved. It is a disgrace and Saudi's should hang their heads in shame

I really wish justice is done to that poor girl and those bloody guys should be beheaded in public for their crimes. These kinds of incidents show how low the world has fallen. Sick and Disgusting. Oblivious judge and pathetic rules. Very very unfortunate girl. My heart goes out to her.
» | someone posted... this is disgusting i am muslim and if what the girl claims is true i am true horrified by the saudi court. but can she prove she was raped by 4 guys? she probably could by going in for a spearm check after she was raped, and they would find 4 types in her, but why wait 8 weeks to report it? and it was only reported because of the abortion she wanted. I dont know waht to think as there is not enough proof. i'll pray that if she is innocent she is forgiven, and if she's not than she gets punished.

The treatment of the poor woman is disgusting and I almost feel embarrassed for the judges who hold authority in that country.
It's worth noting that this article doesn't tell anything near the whole story. Her male friend was also raped, and the judge claims that there was no proof that she didn't consent to it, despite being provided with a video recording of the incident.

Hence i find the victims story hard to believe:- Women are not allowed to speak to men( even their cousins) and here she is accepting rides? ... That to from a complete stranger?.... Huh? If you have ever been to the east of Jeddah, you'd notice that there are check points every where -- yet there is not "one" witness? -- Surely a "Shutay "- ( Police official) would have spotted this woman being held in a car, against her will?.... Furthermore abortion is considered murder in K.S.A...
» continued.... | Saad posted... To sum up, the court doesn't believe her story cause it doesn't make sense.
However if she is telling the truth,.... then all we can do, is be sorry for her -- she was at fault, the moment she accepted the ride -- which it self is against Saudi laws
" A women is not allowed to sit with a "Na-Mehrum" ( stranger) " I really don't understand, how she thought she would be able to get away with abortion( murder)? -- Even attempting to get abortion is a crime. She has no one else to blame but herself

» However unfair, here is WHY she got what she did: | Benjamin Feibleman posted... I learned this in my Islam class yesterday, it was an analisys of this particular case: For a rape/adultery to be confirmed penetration has to be witnessed by 4 people. (This is to keep false accusations from stacking up.) The men won't testify against each other, so they won't be charged. The unmarried woman did however become pregnant, and so her body basically testified against herself that she had had sex out of the confines of the law, marriage. 100 ashes. Messed up, but that's the "why".
