JEDDAH – An institute will be set up to teach Chinese language in University of Jeddah. An agreement to this effect was signed in China on Tuesday between by University of Jeddah Deputy President for Development and Sustainable Development Dr. Majed Bin Said Al-Mar’ashi and a representative of the Chinese Confucius Institute.

Dr. Al-Mar’ashi signed the agreement on behalf of the university President Dr. Adnan Al-Jumaidan, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) said.

Dr. Al-Mar’ashi stressed the importance of such an agreement due to the dire need for teaching the Chinese language in the Kingdom, a process that gained momentum since the historic visit to China by Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman, deputy premier and minister of defense.

He further said that Confucius Institute is the most important institutions recognized for teaching the Chinese language. It has branches and partnerships all over the world. Its role is restricted to educational partnerships to spread the teaching of Chinese language.

Meanwhile, the agreement coordinator Dr. Ahmed Al-Zahrani said the agreement states that Confucius Institute will provide language teachers, the curricula and participate in the establishment phase of the institute.

He drew attention to the fact that the university would officially establish and administer the institute, apart from organizing education and training activities for all segments of the society in cooperation with the Faculty of Languages and Translation at University of Jeddah.
