January 17, 2019

RIYADH — The Ministry of Labor and Social Development and Kenya’s Ministry of Labor and Social Protection have signed the final minutes for starting recruitment of domestic workers from Nairobi. This was part of the bilateral agreement signed between the two countries in an effort to open new channels to meet the Kingdom’s growing demand for skilled and trained domestic workers.

The minutes was signed by Faisal Al Otaibi, director general of international relations at the Ministry of Labor, and Eko Pattani, minister of labor and social protection of Kenya, in the presence of Saudi Ambassador to Kenya Muhammad Abdul Ghani Khayyat.

The agreement provides for a legal framework to enhance cooperation between the two parties, protect the rights of both employers and domestic workers, and regulate their contractual relationship.

The pact covers several areas of cooperation, such as the hiring of Kenyan domestic workers, the rights of domestic workers and employers, the provision and simplification of the recruitment and employment procedures, and the efforts to curb recruitment costs in both countries.

It is stipulated in the agreement that domestic workers shall be hired only through recruitment offices, companies, agencies or through licensed employment centers in both countries. It also envisages for drawing up a uniform labor contract for domestic workers. — SG/SPA
