Abdul Rahman wins first JCG Carrom title

— A six week carrom tournament was held for the first time here with Indians from different states participating. In the range of 14-75 age group, 32 players participated in this tournament.

Carrom (also spelled carom) is a cue sport-based tabletop game of South Asian origin. In South Asia, many clubs and cafés hold regular tournaments. Different standards and rules exist in different areas for carom, which is also considered the king of indoor games.

The initial rounds saw singles and doubles contests over 8 boards where the player with maximum points advanced to further rounds. Two tournaments were played simultaneously for adults and kids. In the kids tournament 8 participated.

The quarterfinals, semifinals and finals were played over best of 3 sets. Abdul Rahman, 36, won the trophy with his successful run from the first round. Asif Ameen, 45, took the runners up trophy after losing to Abdul Rahman in the final. Waqas Ansari, 38, and Sameer took the third and fourth position respectively.

In the quarterfinals, Murli Tindivanam, who hails from the state of Tamil Nadu and considered as one of the best players and a possible winner, unluckily lost to Abdul Rahman. Abid Mohiuddin, Faheem Pasha and Moin Baig were the other quarterfinalists.

The first quarterfinal between Abid Mohiddin and Sameer Ibrahim saw the latter make it to semis. The second quarterfinal saw Murli Tindivanam losing to Abdul Rahman with the third quarterfinal between Moin Baig and Asif Ameen, seeing the latter advancing. The last quarterfinal between Faheem Pasha and Waqas Ansari saw Waqas qualifying.

In the semifinals, Waqas played against Asif Ameen and Abdul Rahman against Sameer Ibrahim. Asif Ameen and Abdul Rahman qualified for the finals.

The chief guest for the final and prize distribution was Ahmeduddin Owaisi. Osman Bin Yeslam Bin Mahfooz, Aijaz Ahmed Khan, Mohammed Yousufuddin Amjad, Tariq Bin Shamlan, Engr Arshad Sahab and Dr. Faiz Zainul Abideen, were the guests of honor.

The event was sponsored by Shalimar Restaurant, Salahuddin Sait, and others. The prize distribution ceremony was held at a local restaurant. In his speech Dr. Faiz Zainul Abideen, appreciated all the players who played very professionally in the tournament and said that a similar carrom tournament would be sponsored by him and will be played in a five star hotel soon.

Earlier, the ceremony began with the recitation of verses from the Holy Qur’an by Hafiz Abdullah Abdulmateen Osmani followed by a naat by Ameenuddin Ansari. The master of the ceremony was Syed Afzal and Sameer Ibrahim. Earlier the bouqets were presented to the honored guests.

Yousufuddin Amjad also said that he will be sponsoring the next carrom tournament with 24 players in doubles and 6 players in juniors participating.

A friendly match was played between Ahmeduddin Owaisi, Aijaz Ahmed Khan, Arshad and Yousufuddin soon after the final match of the tournament.

Professional Carrom Strikers were presented by Danish Baig to all the players. These were distributed to the players in the ceremony by Dr. Faiz Zainul Abideen, Osman Bin Mahfooz, Aijaz Khan, Syed Arshad Ahmed and Yousufuddin Amjad.

The juniors tournament was won by Syed Aqeel, while Sameer Ibrahim and Sibghatullah Baig won the doubles tournament. They beat Imran and Asif Abbasi for the doubles title. Their trophies were distributed by Osman Bin Mahfooz, Aijaz Ahmed Khan and Yousufuddin Ajmad.

All the players who played in the tournament were trained by the Masters of Carrom in Jeddah, Nazeer Sait from Hyderabad, Osman Ghani from Mumbai and Saifuddin from Delhi. This tournament was made possible by the efforts of Abid Mohiuddin, Sameer Ibrahim and Faheem Pasha.
