Why do people lie?

WE all know lying is not a good habit, but if it is not good then why do people lie? A lie is something which is not true because you want other people to believe in it.

You parents and teachers keep telling you that it is not okay to tell lies.

We all want to make our parents proud and our friends happy. If we do something wrong, we try to hide it with a lie. You think telling the truth will make them mad or angry at you. It is only because you think about the situation this way!

However, lies always get you in trouble. If you have told a lie once, you have to tell more lies to cover up that lie. A good liar should have a terrific memory to remember all the lies he or she told and to whom he/she told. (This is not possible).

You tell a lie about not breaking a vase, and you tell it was not you. You tell another lie that when it happened you were not at home. Now where were you? Make up another lie and involve a friend. Now that friend has to lie as well. It is vicious cycle, which continues dangerously. It falls apart in the end.

So back to the question about why people lie: It is because they want to avoid punishment, to get someone else in trouble. To make themselves more interesting. To keep secrets. To get your own way with a parent or a teacher. For example: “I can’t do PE today because mom said so.” What if the PE teacher asks your mom?

Remember that truth is always better than a lie. You hurt others with lies. Someone else gets into trouble although it was your fault. You upset and tease others with your lies. It is simply not healthy. Talk about your fears with your friends or family. They will always give you a better solution than lying.

Parents have responsibility and they care about you. They need to know that you are safe and caring for yourself. You need to be honest and admit when you have made a mistake.

Accept the mistakes and consequence; you will realize that you learn better with those experiences instead of lying about it. You are part of a family so you need to trust and support each other.

Remember Pinocchio (the wooden puppet) next time when you lie. Of course your nose won’t grow as his, but you will have to face the consequences.
