COLOMBO — England made two changes to their squad for the third and final Test against Sri Lanka, with seamer Stuart Broad coming in for the rested James Anderson, while Jonny Bairstow replaces injured all-rounder Sam Curran, who is out with a side issue.

England ended a 17-year wait for a Test series victory in Sri Lanka after taking an unassailable 2-0 lead with a 57-run victory in Pallekele on Sunday.

Anderson, England's record wicket-taker, has claimed just one wicket in the first two tests, off his second delivery of the series, with the hosts preparing spin-friendly pitches.

"I understand the reasoning behind it with the series already won," the 36-year-old was quoted as saying on the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) website.

"With the winter we've got ahead, it makes sense for Stuart to get some cricket. He's not played for a while and it's going to be a tough tour of the West Indies.

"It's a good opportunity for him and the team. You have to look at the situation — it's hard work for seamers here and it's not like I've been able to have a huge input on the games."

Broad missed out on a place in the starting 11 for the first two Tests but will feature in the match on Friday at Colombo, a venue where he made his debut in 2007.

Wicketkeeper Bairstow, who missed the first test due to an ankle injury, takes the place of Curran, but will play as a specialist batsman with Ben Foakes keeping wicket once more.

Foakes impressed with a century on debut in the first Test and kept a fit-again Bairstow out of the side for the victory in Pallekele.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka skipper Dinesh Chandimal will miss the third Test as he recovers from a groin injury that he picked up in the series opener.

Sri Lanka Cricket added that pace bowler Suranga Lakmal will continue to lead the side in his absence while all-rounder Danushka Gunathilaka was named as Chandimal's replacement.

Spinner Akila Dananjaya is also unavailable for the contest as he gets his bowling action assessed in Australia this week. The 25-year-old was reported by match officials for a suspect bowling action in the first test.

England team for third Test: Rory Burns, Keaton Jennings, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root (captain), Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, Moeen Ali, Ben Foakes (wicketkeeper), Adil Rashid, Jack Leach, Stuart Broad.

Bangladesh's Shakib doubtful

for first West Indies Test

Bangladesh suffered a blow Wednesday after skipper Shakib Al Hasan said he was not sure if he would be fit in time for the opening Test against the West Indies. Shakib, 31, missed the recent Test series against Zimbabwe because of surgery on an injured finger in September.

The batsman was declared fit by the team's physio and included in the squad for the two-Test West Indies series starting Thursday in Chittagong.

"We know how challenging it is to play a five-day match. So still there is confusion whether I have reached that level (to play)," Shakib told reporters in Chittagong.

"I have trained only in four sessions. Among them, two sessions were optional. Let's see, I may have to wait till the end."

Shakib's return was a big boost for the home side, who have struggled in recent Tests. They were thrashed 2-0 by the West Indies in July, and then salvaged a 1-1 home series draw against Test minnows Zimbabwe earlier this month.

Shakib acknowledged playing the West Indies would be more challenging than the Zimbabwe series, but said the two sides are closely matched.

"I think both the teams will have equal chances. The wicket may get spin... (but) sometimes the wicket starts behaving well after a few days of playing," he said of the Chittagong venue.

"As both the teams are very close in rankings — eighth and ninth, I think the series will be a very important one. I am hopeful we will perform well."

West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite said they must not rest on their success during the home series against Bangladesh.

"Pitches are obviously different to what we played on (in the Caribbean). Whatever we do, whether fast bowling or spin, we have to do it well," he said.

"We can't think about the past series. We have to stick to our plans, and I think we will go on top."

The West Indies have never lost a Test match in Bangladesh, winning six and drawing one.

The second Test will be played in Dhaka from Nov. 30 to Dec. 4.

The visitors will also play three One-Day Internationals and three Twenty20 internationals during their month-long tour of Bangladesh. — Agencies
