JEDDAH — On Nov. 10, the World Science Day for Peace and Development was celebrated around the globe with the aim of connecting science to the community and shedding light on scientific developments.

Saudi Arabia participated in several programs to enhance the knowledge economy and the chances of learning locally and globally, with the focus on “knowledge is a right for all” which is the theme of this year’s World Science Day.

The UN has approved science as one of the human rights when it celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, stating in Article No. 27: “Each person has the right to protect the emotional or material rights for any scientific, literary or artistic productions of theirs”.

This is an invitation for everyone to participate effectively in sustainable development on the international level.

The Kingdom also participated in the United Nations Academy for Sustainable Development in Germany for the years 2017-2018 with more than 30 Saudi male and female participants who embraced the value of cultural exchange through the programs of Direction CSR and Direction Knowledge and Cultural Exchange. The participating members transformed the shared knowledge into effective initiatives and are currently implementing them across the Kingdom, sharing the knowledge with the local community.

Dr. Shadi Khawandanah, chairman of Direction CSR, said the knowledge initiatives in conjunction with the Emirate of Makkah and the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce were legally registered in the UN.

He added that the Kingdom is one of the biggest supporters of the knowledge exchange approach, which is a right for all, and all sectors are offering several programs and scientific conventions that are free and accessible to everyone in order to develop the community within Vision 2030.

Nesma Hassan, director of CSR Programs, said Direction is granting opportunities of learning for all, with the focus on profound and sustainable knowledge, along with transferring knowledge into tangible work which individuals and communities benefit from.

Fatin Al-Shehri, leader of Initiatives Team, said these initiatives have a vital role in raising the bar within individuals and communities, as exchanging experiences helps built solid communities with diverse knowledge dimensions in relation to ideas and experiences.

She stressed how individual participation in knowledge initiatives broadens the horizon of thought and communication, contributing to create the knowledge society in accordance to Vision 2030.

Heba Felemban, member of Direction Knowledge and Executive Board, said Direction has excelled in its knowledge and cultural programs with a high sense of organization and meticulously placed objectives, allowing participants to experience various depths of knowledge internationally.

“The participants met with officers at the UN headquarters in Geneva to exchange knowledge, and got transparent and objective answers, which enriched their depth of knowledge,” she said.

She added that Direction contributes by presenting knowledge and learning opportunities through a modern and contemporary approach, meeting the standards of the era, by transforming a piece of information from a book or a web page into a live experience, which makes the program an experiential learning spurt. It also allowed individuals to uniquely practice their rights of learning in far-from-typical ways.

Halah Nouran, member of Direction Knowledge and Executive Board, focused on the importance of the Knowledge and Cultural Exchange programs in supporting science and development. She also mentioned that she personally gained valuable knowledge through participating in such programs. Participants gain unique learning opportunities and core values through immersing in different cultures, she added.

Nouran also emphasized the importance of the role of education in spreading awareness, development, contributing to positive impact, and empowering individuals to develop communities. Finally, she mentioned that these programs link communities through cultural participation and experience exchange and that it is a right for all. — SG
