Korea, Trump and Iran!

Hussein Shobokshi

The leaders of the two Koreas — North and South — in their recent historic meeting pledged to end the formal state of war between the two countries after North Korea committed to completely abandon its nuclear program in a bid to bring peace to the peninsula.

Seizing the opportunity, US President Donald Trump immediately began to capitalize on this development, furthering his political interests, especially after the South Korean leader claimed that President Trump was behind this historic achievement. Trump later told a cheering crowd of his supporters that he was “in charge of everything” over this historic achievement, making his supporters chant “Nobel, Nobel,” demanding Nobel Peace Prize for Trump.

What is the actual outcome of what happened on the world stage? South Korea has a very high concern as it will bear the largest share of the cost to rebuild North Korea. Japan may also share its responsibility to a certain extent. This a very expensive bill which will have its bearing on the economic development, but there are views in South Korea that believe the cost is worthy. Consumer sector, agricultural machinery and industrial agglomeration make them able to improve their competitiveness in the global market which will provide them with the cost. Moreover, it will also reduce the military and security spending.

Meanwhile, China may lose a troublesome but and an important ally to rivals — Japan and America. It seems that North Korea will soon exit the historic axis of evil as Iraq did in the aftermath of the war launched by the United States during President George W. Bush, leaving just Iran alone in the axis, and thus theoretically the next pressure will be on Iran, more violent and focused.

But is Iran really going to get the “proper punishment of its nuclear program” and its export of terrorism around the world in a systematic and documented way clear to all, but there are groups and opinions that want to “stay” with Iran as it is. There is the democratic left that sees Iran as a balancing state that offers another view from the days US President Jimmy Carter, who contributed to bringing Khomeini to power, up to Barack Obama, who was convinced of the need to coordinate with Iran openly. There is another team in the far right, like the neo-conservatives, who believe that since Iran is besieged and it can be taken advantage of exactly as what happened during the invasion of Iraq by George H.W. Bush and later his son where the coordination was complete with the Iranian regime even under Khomeini. As well as there is a conviction among the arms industry that Iran is contributing to the sales of military systems of US allies in the region and also contributing to strengthening military coordination and security and therefore it is important to continue the same way — keeping them weak and besieged.

Everyone is eagerly waiting to see the fate of Iran after North Korea. Donald Trump seems convinced that the nuclear deal is flawed and that Iran should be punished for its ballistic missiles and its sponsorship of terrorist organizations such as Hezbollah and Houthis in the region, but members of deep state politicians in America seem to disagree with him and do not share the same enthusiasm for sanctions and deterrent resolutions. Who wins? What is the “final” position awaiting Iran? A striking and important question is what Trump seeks to answer himself by “shaking” the decision-makers in the pivotal positions in the deep state that explains serious changes in key executive positions in the US administration. Iran drama coming. Let’s watch.
