IT is not too much for Makkah or its residents that the municipality had signed contracts worth SR9 million to prepare and maintain public parks in the holy city.

It is the right of the citizens in all areas that their municipalities follow suit of Makkah municipality and review the conditions of their public parks to maintain and repair them.

Many of the public parks in various regions were confiscated by land sharks while many others were turned into garbage dumping areas.

A public park is not a luxury nor is it an empty land which remains vacant because the residents are not able to construct their houses on.

The public parks are an important component of each and very town or city. A city does not deserve its name if each of its neighborhood does not have its own private public park.

A public park will stand up as a witness to the civilization of the neighborhood and the development of its residents.

It also stands as a witness that the officials in charge of the towns and cities have shouldered their responsibilities toward these towns and cities.

The public park is the lung through which a neighborhood will breathe. Without it, the residents will not only suffocate but will lose the taste of life.

The SR9 million to be spent by the Makkah municipality on public parks is not a big sum of money but will be huge and a big loss if the municipality was not able to monitor the work of the companies with which it had signed the contracts to look after the cleanliness and upkeep of the parks.

The municipality should make sure that the companies it has contracted have done their duties and have fulfilled their contracts to the letter.

It will also be a big loss if the contracts have terminated and the public parks are left to dry out and wither before they are turned into garbage dumping areas.

The municipalities in all regions should take good care of public parks. Residents should also be watchdogs so that their public parks will not become areas where people dump their garbage.

Without the continuous attention to the parks, the millions of riyals which were spent on their construction and maintenance would be a total waste.

The areas of land on which the parks were constructed would also be a complete waste. They would tempt the residents to dump their waste or to confiscate the lands for other residential and commercial purposes.
