The sky is the limit for Saudi women

April 30, 2018

Riyadh — Alwaleed Philanthropies (AP), chaired by Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal, has launched a unique online campaign to show a different side of Saudi Arabia. The striking footage at the center of the campaign shows the first ever joint wingsuit flight by a Saudi man and woman wearing traditional clothing.

The flight is a symbolic leap of faith for men and women as Saudi Arabia makes advances on women’s empowerment. The campaign seeks to challenge stereotypes about Saudi men and women, and shed new light on the women’s empowerment movement in the Kingdom.

The film emphasizes the importance of working together to move forward on gender empowerment.

Drawing inspiration from UN Women’s He for She and other campaigns designed to engage men on gender equality, the film highlights the mutual respect and understanding needed from both Saudi men and women to build a more equal society.

The film celebrates the Saudi women and men who have worked together to strive for empowerment as the fruits of their labor begin to take root in the country. Saudi women are now able to drive, join the military and visit sports arenas and cinemas.

AP has helped to drive this enormous social change through their grants and programs. In 2017, the foundation hosted the first women’s empowerment conference in Riyadh in partnership with the Thomson Reuters Foundation. The partnership has also trained female Saudi journalists. The foundation has also provided legal support to women through the Wa’iyah Initiative for Women’s Legal Rights.

Princess Lamia Bint Majed Alsaud, Secretary General of Alwaleed Philanthropies, said: “We want to celebrate the generations of Saudi women who have pioneered progress and opened up opportunities for other women, but we also want to recognize the supportive Saudi men who have not been intimidated by women’s advancements in our society, and have stood in solidarity with them. As our Kingdom modernizes, Saudi men and women must work together to create a future we can all be proud of.”
