Riyadh — The Royal Saudi Air Defense Forces (RSADF) intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile fired by Iran-affiliated Houthi militias toward the southern Saudi province of Najran on Saturday.
Spokesman of the Coalition Forces Supporting Legitimacy in Yemen Col. Turki Al-Maliki said in a statement that the missile fired from Sada governorate in Yemen was targeting populated areas in Najran city.
There were no reports of casualties or damage.
“This hostile action by Iran-allied Houthi militias proves the continued involvement of the Iranian regime in supporting the Houthi armed group with qualitative capabilities in a clear and explicit defiance and violation of UN Resolutions No. 2216 and No. 2231 in order to threaten the security of Saudi Arabia and the region,” said Col. Al-Maliki.
Firing ballistic missiles toward populated cities and villages is contrary to the international humanitarian law, he said.
Col. Al-Maliki renewed his call for the international community to take serious and effective steps to stop the blatant Iranian violations of continued smuggling and transfer of ballistic missiles and weapons to terrorist groups and outlaws.
Iran should be held accountable for its blatant defiance of international norms and values as well as its threat to the regional and international security, he added.
Last Tuesday, a ballistic missile fired by the Houthi group toward southern Jazan region was shot down by Saudi forces.
Saudi Arabia said on Nov. 4 it intercepted a ballistic missile over Riyadh’s King Khaled Airport.
A UN Security Council-appointed panel confirmed the missile was manufactured in Iran, along with three other missiles fired from Yemen toward the Kingdom in 2017.
