JEDDAH – Saudi women interested in a creative career path are increasingly turning to design fields such as architecture, interior design and apparel design.
After the many attempts to break the work barrier for women in mixed atmospheres, Saudi women are playing a greater role in the country’s job market, especially in design fields.
With Saudi men showing a lack of interest in specializing in fashion design, Saudi universities, both public and private, are increasingly catering their curricula to women.
The general manager of an architectural and interior design company said Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz University, Effat University and Dar Al-Hekma College all offer sound design majors with graduates only lacking the necessary experience.
Isam Al-Sayed said gender mixing is still a barrier but it is becoming less of a concern as more and more Saudi women venture into the job market. “The design field is large and has multiple sectors and women normally excel in this field because it requires good taste and creativity.”
