RIYADH — Saudis on social media have launched a new campaign against high prices at restaurants.

Similar campaigns have been launched in the past against telecommunication companies and other businesses.

Online posts called for the boycott of restaurants which keep raising menu prices despite a significant drop in the price of all types of raw food material, whether chicken, meat, vegetables, or fruits.

“If the food and restaurant sector is not in sync with market variables, it is going to anger its customers,” said economic analyst Fadel Albuainain.

The Council of Competition, which is an independent body protecting and encouraging fair competition and combating monopolistic practices, recently asked residents and citizens to file lawsuits against restaurants that offer non-veg dishes at high prices despite a drop in the price of raw material.

In 2012, consumers launched a social media campaign termed “Let it rot” against a sudden hike in chicken prices.

A similar campaign with the same name was launched in the Eastern Province last year to bring down fish prices.
